English Department

Mission

The mission of the English department is to provide students of engineering and technical specialties with excellent English skills at both the intermediate and advanced levels, as well as provide students with the opportunity to study English in-depth and support them to be global engineers.

Faculty & Staff

We as a team lead our students to a bright future with English as an international language for globally recognized engineers. Currently, the MUST English Department has 27 instructors including professors, associate professors, senior teachers and teachers, and an English Fellow granted by the U.S. Department of State.  The English Department deliberately cooperates with foreign and domestic organizations such as the Mongolian English Teachers Association (ELTAM), the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Embassy, U.S. Peace Corps, VSO, JCS, IET Australia-Mongolia, foreign language centers, and departments of other universities.

Research Focus

The leading scientific research fields of the English Department faculty include linguistics, education, foreign language teaching methodology, translation theory, and terminology.  The English Department has organized both theoretical and practical conferences for teachers of universities, colleges, and high schools in cooperation with the Mongolian Association of English Language Teachers (ELTAM) for 10 years. These conferences were attended by hundreds of teachers from both urban and rural areas. The department initiated the International Conference on Linguistics and English Language Teaching Methodology. The results of the research work of experienced teachers with academic degrees and young teachers with other degrees are regularly discussed and published in foreign and domestic conference proceedings. The colleagues of the English Department have published more than 40 handbooks and coursebooks on ESP courses for university students which are being used for undergraduate and graduate programs of MUST.

Majors: Teaching & Learning

We offer several different English courses that will allow students to obtain scientific engineering knowledge, and core skills in language to prepare individuals in both human relations and the industrial arena to use English, the world’s international language, as a member of the international community for an undergraduate program. In addition, in order to facilitate students’ mastery of academic and research writing skills, our department provides opportunities to advance their research and academic writing. Academic and research English are offered for the graduate programs at the university. As for students, there are many additional English programs including English clubs and English courses, olympiads, competitions, English language days, and joint summer training in the fields of engineering, technology, and business management, in which many students are involved. In the annual English Olympiad, students participate in the form of writing essays and giving presentations and compete in two rounds in both the individual and team competitions. The winners receive school and sponsorship awards.
