ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Applied ling

1. Undergraduate education

Since 1995, School of Foreign Languages has prepared English-Russian and English-Korean specialists in the field of “Engineer-Translator” and “Engineer-Teacher”. From the academic year 2001-2002, the school started preparing “English-Russian Translator-Engineer” and “Foreign Language Translation” at the undergraduate level and “Linguistics” at the postgraduate level. In response to market demands, the school has offered new academic program “Technical Translation” at the undergraduate study starting the academic year of 2008-2009. Since 2015-2016, the school has focused on preparing highly qualified specialists in the field of “Foreign Language Translation” at the undergraduate and “Technical Translation”, “Applied Linguistics” at postgraduate levels. Since its inception, more than 600 students have successfully completed undergraduate studies and over 180 students have received master degree. Nowadays, more than 80 students are studying in the translation field.

Knowledge

Technical translators will obtain extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering higher education program, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of native and foreign languages, applied linguistics, translation theory and its applications. Students will gain a general knowledge of basic concepts and terms in the fields of science and technology such as mining, geology, energy, construction, architecture, information technology, mechanics, food science, biotechnology, as well as the ability to translate and interpret in these areas.

Abilities

Technical translators will obtain comprehensive understanding in linguistics, applied linguistics, translation theory and terminology studies, have an ability to define technical terms and professional words in the target language, create a terminology database, develop technical documentation, and acquire an ability to define and translate technical and scientific terms at the professional level.

Admission requirement

Prospective students for an undergraduate program at Mongolian University of Science and Technology must pass the general entrance exams in foreign languages and mathematics in order to meet the minimum entry requirements.

Alumni and employer

Graduates with a Bachelor's Degree in Technical Translation will be able to translate and interpret (from English to Mongolian and vice versa) in the fields of science and technology at a high professional level and develop technical documentation. Upon successful completion of the study, foreign language specialists will have an ability to be aware of ethics and adhere to the professional responsibility at workplace and acquire good interpersonal communication ability.

According to the undergraduate program, students are offered more than 50 different courses including:

English Grammar and Vocabulary I-IV, Spoken English I-II, English for Business Communication I-II, Translation Theory, Scientific and Technical Translation I-IV, Translation I-II, Interpretation, Scientific and Technical English I-II, Technical writing, Language and Country studies, Preparation for TOEFL, Ethics for Translators, Ethics in International Relations, History of the UK and USA, World Literature, Business English, Stylistics of English language, Basic English I-II, Pre-intermediate English I-III, Intermediate English, Basic Russian I-II, Pre-intermediate Russian I-II, Intermediate Russian I, German I-II, Introductory and Professional internships.

We offer over 20 courses for the master’s degree programs including Research Methods in Linguistics, Research seminars I-III, Technical Translation, Technical Writing, Applied Linguistics, Language Policy and Planning, Terminology Studies, Theory of Language (English, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese), Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Teaching Methodology, Comparative Linguistics, Education Studies, Intercultural Communication, Educational Linguistics, Research seminar, etc.

 

We have developed e-learning courses in order to meet asynchronous, efficient, open educational needs using information technology. In that frame of work, graduate students can study the following courses online and take tests in the distance at a real time:

3. Doctoral degree program

  • Linguistics

As a part of their doctoral degree program, students are encouraged to take more than 20 courses in Linguistics such as Academic English, History of Linguistics and Research Methodology, Terminology Studies and Translation, Computational Linguistics, Contemporary English (Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean), Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Ethnolinguistics, Communication Etiquette, Cultural Linguistics, Stylistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Comparative Linguistics, Mongolian Linguistics and Philology, Research Seminars, etc. 

In addition, we teach English at undergraduate and graduate level to students majoring in various engineering fields at Mongolian University of Science and Technology.

 

Faculty publications

Faculty professors and lecturers have published a number of course books, handbooks and translation works for students majoring in translation and also for students majoring in different engineering fields. We obtained over ten copyrights as well as published more than 50 scientific articles in international and 170 articles in domestic journals and proceedings.
